Hunting All Day Beneath The Long-night Moon

     by Chris Dombrowski

Until it seems time is told on the face, handless,
noon-reflected in creekwater trying
to slow its descent through the valley, the outhills
under hoarfrost white and pure as death
rarely is: the pheasant’s beak
full of the nightshade it dropped into
like a puppet abandoned by its master’s hands—
What of you
will last in me who knows not how or whom to ask,
(in orison?) world or regal bird
nor what carves us, knifeless,
from shivering limbs.
